I am not for everyone…block.

This blog is all about who we are and what we do. We do family here. That should be my motto as much as I say it. You can see from all the pics that these Newfies are our family and their care and health come first. I must not be all that bad if the world renowned “Incredible Dr Pol” chose me for his newest Newfie “Libby”. With over 50 years experience as a vet, I believe he’s a bit more qualified to decide that then any of you haters wishing to run their mouths. I am not for everyone, no. If you’ve looked around our website, seen our social media, make it through this blog and you still like me? You’re my people. If not, BYEEEE. You should go ahead and leave now.

I’ve definitely had my share of “Adopt! Don’t Shop!” people.
I’ve had my share of, “She’s a backyard breeder, because…” people.
I’ve dealt with the, “she doesn’t breed according to AKC standard.” people.

Becoming a breeder was not a decision I made because I wanted people to like me. I’ve never really been one to care about the opinions of sheep. I got into breeding because I fell in love with the Newfoundland breed, first and foremost. Second, I struggled with finding a good family dog that could be around small children…I had a ton of those. Once I discovered the awesomeness they bring to the family, I had to share.. And finally, because I had grown up the daughter of a breeder and it was like second nature. My second Newfoundland came from a puppy mill disguised as a great breeder. He died before seeing the age of 2. There will be a blog written today that explains this situation to give you a better understanding of what had the biggest impact on me, inspiring me to become a breeder. I made it my mission to find a healthy Newfie pair and start breeding on my own. I never dreamed it would turn into something this big but it wasn’t really all that surprising. I already had 13 years studying the breed, and if you know me, I am a dork and studying is my jam so, I really go all out. I spent hours in the library researching the history and tracing all historic accounts of newfoundlands all over the world. I soaked it all in like a sponge. I have so many notebooks full of notes and cool facts as well as poetry inspired by them and documented details of their heroic rescue efforts that span all the way back from the beginning of the breed. I also learned that there were many things about the current AKC organization that I didn’t like simply because IN MY OPINION and after MY OWN research, I felt it didn’t line up with multiple historic accounts. I knew breeding was going to be a challenge with that mentality but, I love this breed and I LOVE the idea of bringing this kind of love to other families. So, here I am…

HOWEVER!

Newfies aren’t endangered and there are MANY other breeders out there. If you don’t like me or my dogs or the way I believe and operate? Go find them! If you question my program or the quality of my dogs and their babies? Don’t get one! My babies are LOVED and SPOILED! They run our homes and yes I said homeS, plural because it takes 2 different homes to accommodate them, right now. One day I will have a farm and 2 homes won’t be needed. I crate trained in the beginning but once they are fully trained, crates are gone and not needed. I’ve lost friends over the dedication I have to my dogs because friends thought they were on the back burner and I’m sorry (not really) but yes, they were. My dogs are my babies and they are a priority. They rely on me for everything…they’re dogs! They already have a short enough lifespan. I do everything in my power to keep them healthy and happy as long as I possibly can. I want their lives to be amazing.

It is true that in my first year of breeding, I couldn’t figure out how to keep my super stud (seriously, he was made for this) away from girls I didn’t want to breed for that cycle. As a result, I had 2 girls who each had one “oops” litter. The thing is, even in that time, my babies had EXCELLENT veterinary care. Their health was my priority then and STILL IS! My girls (some retired, now) are happy, healthy and living their best lives. I do not and would not EVER ‘get rid’ of them when they no longer produce. Breeding is merely a means to afford their very expensive lifestyle. And believe me, they are super expensive when they’re as spoiled as mine. They sleep in my bed (yes…all 5 of them lol) and they are all like my shadows. They tell me what to do. They want to play? Its playtime. They want to rest? It’s quiet time! Go outside? Come in? Come with me? Yes, but you have to be good. Chase the squirrels? LOL no, you can’t (hence the newly built 8ft privacy fence around the whole yard…HAH! JUMP THAT BASH’R). I’m sure you get my point.

This is too long, I’ll wrap it up now. We recently (and by recent, I mean yesterday) shared a reel of Willow while she was still in labor. She was near the end with only 2 more pups to go. We wanted to show the beauty of the birthing to nipple process. It was the most beautiful display of “look at my beautiful babies”. She is so gentle and loving with them. She’s always been SUCH a good mama. Anyways, a stranger came along and decided to share that reel with the caption of “Look how tired that poor girl is” which then came with the attack on the breeder for over breeding and being a back yard breeder. I don’t know why this got to me the way it did, but it did. How dare you speak about my gorgeous girl as if she is anything less than the BOSS that she is handling the labor with strength WHILE feeding, loving on and caring for the babies she had already birthed. OF COURSE SHE WAS TIRED!! SHE WAS IN LABOR!! One A labor which consisted of pushing out 10 pups, one of which was a stillborn that you could tell she was broken hearted over. OF COURSE SHE’S TIRED! You know what else she is? A VERY proud MAMA!

What the hell is wrong with people? Why is a majority of the population looking around to find things to be negative, mean, spiteful, entitled, opinionated…This lady didn’t know my dogs from Adam! What gave her the right to share my beautiful post and turn it into ugly without knowing ONE SINGLE THING about what she was saying? This is called IGNORANCE. It boils my blood. If you ask me, the real epidemic in this world are self absorbed, entitled, self righteous crusaders (typically found with a keyboard as their weapon of choice). If you look at that reel, how is love not the first things you see? Love is what replenishes what she is lacking from the long pregnancy and labor she just endured. What those pups give to her body, and the level of care she receives from us, her human family, AS WELL AS, the level of love and care from Breezy and Bash’r, they are very well taken care. You wouldn’t believe how parental they are with those girls. I didn’t know the Newfie pack structure and strength until recently. It’s the best thing about them, yet..

I’ve decided to lay out my breeding program for all to see and if you don’t like it…find the nearest “unfollow”, “unsubscribe”, “delete”, “block”, or whatever button you need to be rid of us all! Please! I take a great deal of pride in weeding out the morons of my life so do it before I find you and do it myself. I’m sure you have your tribe, stick with them. We have our own and we’re good. This is how I roll. I believe that my way is the best way for MY babies and it’s been pretty damn good. In fact, as a breeder…my stats on returns and medical issues are the best of the best! So, my record speaks for me. If you’d like me as a breeder, we will get along just fine and you can call or text me anytime. If you don’t, I wish you well on your Newfie journey (I really do) and I hope you find the Newfie of your dreams because what I can agree with you on is that every bit of slobbery drool and pieces of dog hair in our food, is worth it for the love and adventure they bring to life…for the whole family. Everyone should be able to experience that…even the morons ;)

BREEDING PROGRAM EXPLAINED-

I start breeding at 18 months under the guidance, care and supervision of a veterinary reproductive specialist.

All dogs are AKC registered (for my prospective puppy families peace of mind…not because I like or respect the AKC)

All females and males have had full genetic DNA health tests done and have come back with ZERO genetic predispositions.

My females have skipped their first 2 heats before being bred and then AT LEAST one heat is skipped between each pregnancy. I let my mamas bodies tell me when they are ready.

My females have their hormones tested before each mating to ensure they are 100% ok to move forward with breeding.

ALL FEMALES AND MALES RETIRE AT OR BEFORE AGE 6.

All females and males are on a healthy diet that consists of some kibble but mostly homemade food. (this is documented in a separate blog post titled “
Homemade Dog Food”) <~~~Click there to see

Once mating season has been successful, all females are given additional vitamin supplements throughout pregnancy and as soon as labor starts each mama gets a dose of calcium.

Postpartum nutrition is JUST AS important as pregnancy so back they stay on the added supplements until 8-12 weeks after the pups are born.
